Set against the backdrop of a life spent in the latitude of the far north, this engaging memoir follows the author’s journey as he casts about in search of Arctic grayling, rainbow trout, and the ultimate truths about life. Narrated with a deep appreciation for nature’s rhythms, Daniel P. Hoffman’s existential pursuit of a “drag-free drift” borrows from the analogous concept in fly fishing where one’s line is moved or ”mended” as necessary to facilitate a fly’s natural flow with the current, free from external and manipulative forces.

About the Author
After guiding visiting anglers each summer throughout Alaska’s famous Katmai region, Daniel Hoffman graduated from the University of Alaska with a degree in wildlife biology. He then shifted gears to a career in law enforcement, ultimately serving 20 years with the Fairbanks Police Department, where he retired as chief in 2009. When he’s not on the water or writing, Daniel enjoys addressing business groups on the topics of risk management and developmental leadership. Reflecting the principles in this book, Hoffman’s presentations are often framed through the lessons and joys of fishing.
