In October 1969 an avid grouse hunter who lived near Pittsburg mailed a modest newsletter to about 50 men who had participated in the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s grouse hunter’s survey, with a card for them to send names and addresses of other grouse-hunting friends back to him. The word spread. and the upland fraternity responded in remarkable numbers. Subscriptions doubled and tripled over and over, gaining with each new issue. By the end of the first year, the fall of 1970, there were 1,800 subscribers.
